To the Citizens of Vassalboro:
In presenting you this website, we do it with a feeling of pride and achievement. We have established the fact the desire for up-to-date Fire Protection is showing signs of maturing.
On November 11th, 1934, a disastrous fire broke out in North Vassalboro, which resulted in a serious loss of property. Owing to inadequate appartus, Winslow and Waterville Fire Department were called, which was an additional expense to the Town. The American Legion, along with other serious minded citizens decided that something would have to be done to strengthen our Fire Fighting abilities. On Sunday, December 30th, a meeting was called by the American Legion Post with this object in view. The situation was throughly discussed and a further meeting was called for January 3rd, 1935. After meeting with the Selectman and the Mill Management, it was decided to form a Fire Department. On February 17th, 1935, A Fire Department was formed under the name of the Legion Fire Department, and to accept outside membership. At this meeting the officer were elected. Under the guidance of Chief Jeffery, plans were quickly formed and put into operation. Members were appointed to various duties and an established routine laid down. Various small items were added to our equipment and then several ways were devised to raise money for additional equipment. On May 27th, 1935, we originated our first Field Day and it was very sucessful. Since the formation of the Fire Department we have through your generous support and our labors earned the total of $1550.00
In October 1935, we purchased a fire station from the American Woolen Company and work was immediately started to bring it to the state of which we were all proud. The work was done by members and all labor was freely volunteered, while no pay of any kind was made except for the floor sander. Our Chief, after consulations with the prominent taxpayers of the Town, and after pointing out the advisability to the Town Officials suggested at our meeting in January 1937, that we insert an article in the warrant to be presented at the Town meeting in March for the sum of $3500.00 for the purchase of a pumper. At that Town meeting it was so voted and the pumper arrived in Vassalboro in August 1937. That is the history of the Vassalboro Fire Department.
We would like to thank everyone who has supported us in the past, and if you think we are worthy of your support in the future we will appreciate your help. This Department stands ready to serve you in any way we can.
